The Institute of Surveyors Tasmania Incorporated is an industry association for members of the land surveying profession in Tasmania, and its objectives are outlined in the Association's Constitution.
The Institute of Surveyors Tasmania (IST) is charged as the prescribed institute under the Surveyors Act 2002 (the Act) and Surveyors Regulations 2014 (the Regulations) with the responsibility to "administer the training, examination and accreditation of persons seeking to establish their competency to practise as registered land surveyors in Tasmania".
The IST has established a sub-committee, the Tasmanian Land Surveyors Accreditation Board (TLSAB), as the body that assesses the professional competence of a person seeking registration to practise as a registerd land surveyor under the provisions of the Act. The IST Council appoints members to the TLSAB in accordance with the Constitution and an approved Terms of Reference.
The IST is not prescribed with any investigative power or regulatory enforcement capacity over Tasmanian registered land surveyors. Under the Act the Office of Surveyor-General is responsible for the development and implementation of legislation, policy, land survey practice standards and the investigation of surveys of land for adequacy, accuracy and compliance, whilst the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading is empowered to receive complaints against a registered surveyor for failure to comply with legal requirements, or in relation to improper, negligent or unfair conduct.
IST Industry Futures Report
In 2021 the IST commissioned Dr Jon Osborn to review
the effectiveness and efficiency of the current institutional arrangements under the Regulations for supporting the
training and examination of candidates seeking Certificates of Competency under the Act, and for supporting the Continuing
Professional Development of Registered Land Surveyors seeking to maintain and renew
their Registration under the Act.
The review identified a complex mix of Tasmanian, jurisdictional, national and trans-Tasman
issues and opportunities, with the Tasmanian experience broadly echoed in other
regions. In response, a large number of
recommendations were developed.
